MAY

May the 4th be with you ...

I'm so glad it's finally May. April was a busy month for me. I had to go back for another mammogram and my gums got infected. Between worrying about my tests and my teeth, I have been very stressed.

Besides all that, every time it rains we go on alert and Don pulls out the sump pump to put under the house. Water got up to the return duct under the house last time it rained and the pump quit working. He took it back and bought one that moves lots more water.

Don and Scout dug a hole under the house today to put a bucket in for the sump pump. That way, we don't have to keep dragging the pump back in and out of the house. I bet it won't be long before we can test it because they're predicting more rain. I'm tired of all the flooding around here. It's got to stop. Doesn't it?

Don's been working six days a week lately. He stays tired and doesn't feel like doing a thing around here. Thankfully, the boys are here. Colt mowed the backyard for me today. I just didn't feel like doing it. I think my body is tired from oral surgery. Doctor Phil scraped my gums.

I tell you, if I didn't have any crap going on I wouldn't have anything to talk about at all. It seems like it's always something. I guess that's the way it is for most people. Sometimes life seems to be going along just fine and everybody and everything seems to be doing well. Other times you can't turn around without hearing bad news and other people's troubles. I prefer the former, to the latter. It seems like when everybody is having trouble there's bad juju in the air or something. I'm always afraid I'm going to catch it. Or, bad lucky's going to notice me and land on my head, or something. I know. I have a whacky imagination sometimes and I tend to see patterns in things and wonder if I'm crazy or they're real!

I do have a healthy imagination. I needed one when I was growing up. I didn't have any brothers or sisters to play with me so I played by myself. You can see remnants of the inner-me when I start talking to myself in public. Usually I'm just reminding myself to stay focused and think of what I need to do like, "Don't forget to buy shampoo and dog food." or something like that, but sometimes I start talking out loud about things I'm thinking in my head and worry that someone might drop a net on me. You never know.

Today I called Home Depot to ask if they carried sump pump buckets. I was willing to race to the store to buy one if they did. The man who spoke to me told me they didn't carry them in the store, but I could buy them online. I said something about that being stupid. I didn't want to order one. I needed it right now.

He kept referring to me as "sir". The first time he said it, I said, "ma'am" but he kept on talking. When he called me "sir" the second time I said, loudly and clearly, "I'm not a man. I'm a woman." He said "Oh, sorry." and I could hear a little titter as he said it. The old fool was laughing at me.

He asked another employee where I might find a bucket and they recommended the Tractor Supply. (Gee, thanks guys.) You'd think a home depot would carry all the supplies you need. If you sell sump pumps it wouldn't hurt you to also carry sump buckets so you don't have to send your customers to your competitors. Some people just kill me.

It's time to close this little ditty and get some rest. Like Forrest Gump said, "I'm tired. I think I'm rest now." Good night y'all.

Which Is It

Which is it? Genius? Or redneck?
I guess you're wondering what that's all about, don't you? I got it into my head last year that I could save my dryer lint and put it out for the birds to make nests. After thinking about it for a while I figured I could use Don's wire collapsible fishing basket to put the lint into, but it took me a while to figure out how to hang it outside for the birds. I wanted to keep it dry.

*cue the inspirational music*

I used a shepard's hook that you can hang flowers on and got Colt's big old umbrella to put over it. I wedged the umbrella handle down in the middle of the lint and hung the basket on the pole. Scout wired the umbrella to the hook with a coat hanger. Wa-laa! It worked. It even survived the storm that went through our area the first night so I hope this will keep my lint from getting rained on.

Well, which is it? Redneck, or genius? I think it's brilliant but I'm prejudice.

I used to feed the birds in the backyard near the mulch pile but had to quit. It was like a fast food restaurant for my cats. I bought a couple of big feeders and hung them in the front yard under my magnolia trees. I can see it from the kitchen window. The feeders hold five pounds of food so I don't have to refill them all the time. I just have to take my bucket of seed and step ladder to reach them. They're higher than my head. I have them hanging from the limbs of the magnolia with coat hangers.

I have a cute little hummingbird feeder that I like to hang on a shepherd's hook outside the kitchen window. It's time to dig it out and hang it back outside for the summer. It's fun watching them jockey for a spot on the feeder.

One year our garden was damaged by a storm and knocked the corn over. The pole beans took over the garden. Weeds sprung up everywhere. Hundreds of little yellow goldfinches came down and feasted on the garden. I never saw so many yellow birds in my life. It was beautiful. Ever since then I've tried to keep a feeder with thistle in it for the goldfinches.

You may think I'm weird for saving my lint and putting it out for the birds, but I think I'm paying if forward for nature. It's all in the eye of the beholder. I think the birds are beautiful to behold. Don't you?

Raising Cane

I love having Scout around here again. Everything went to pot when he was gone. He likes to stay busy so he decided to cut the cane that is growing in our backyard.
Scout cut down the cane because it gets too big every summer and looks like it's falling over the fence. He has his old trusty dog, Buddy, helping him.
He stacked the canes to save for some other project around here. Hopefully, we can use them to grow some pole beans this summer. They might make good fishing poles, too.
Scout cut the stalks down to about a foot high. Some of the stalks were thick. It took him a while to get them all cut down but it will all grow back before we know it, unless Vinnie has his way.
Vinnie helped Scout clean up the clippings. I noticed that he's already been nibbling on the new shoots of cane that are coming up.
The cane was this tall a couple of years ago. I'm only five feet tall. The cane was easily fifteen to twenty feet tall. I like the fluffy plumes at the top of the cane. It gives the backyard a tropical feel. It reminds me of playing in the woods when we were kids. We used to play in the "monkey trees" which were covered in vines, hence the name. 'You Tarzan? Me Jane.'

APRIL

It's springtime in Georgia. Everything is growing and blooming. Last week we cooked out on the grill, and I mowed the yard, so the summer rituals are just beginning. I love looking out the back window and seeing my well-manicured lawn and watching Scout's goat, Vinnie, munching on bushes and vines growing outback.

When Scout goes outside all the animals follow him around hoping he will feed them. He looks like a pied-piper with Buddy, Vinnie, and a bunch of cats trailing behind. He never can feed the chickens without his entourage.

We get a kick out of watching Vinnie try to reach vines to eat, or jump on the picnic table. I run him off a hundred times. He lowers his head like he wants to butt me but changes his mind and jumps off the table before I can get there. One time I tipped the table over and made him get off so he knows I mean business when I tell him to get down. I even conked him on the back with a stick to make him get off. He knows I'm not afraid to make him behave. I'm learning as we go because I've never had a goat before.

The chickens are fat and nasty. Really, they're nasty looking. They're supposed to be white but their feathers are a buff color and we're not sure if they are just dirty or they turned that color. They aren't the pretty white color they were when they were young. I wonder how hard it would be to wash a chicken. Can you imagine that? I bet that would be a hoot. Oh well, I'm not trying that any time soon.

Scout and I saw a hawk circling over the backyard the other day. I wondered aloud if it was looking for a cat and Scout reminded me that it might be sizing up our chickens. They're pretty fat. They can't even jump a foot to get on a stick to roost. I don't know if a hawk could carry them away, or not. I sure hope he doesn't try it and we find out the hard way.

One night I ordered a magazine online, and then I forgot about it. I got the magazine in the mail Wednesday. It was the Georgia Travel Guide. Andy Lincoln, of The Walking Dead, was on the cover. It's filmed in Senoia Georgia. I'm hooked on The Walking Dead and try to never miss an episode, or a rerun. I was so happy to get my magazine. If you're interested in exploring Georgia you should go to www.ExploreGeorgia.org, or on Facebook at Explore Georgia, and order one.

A Tisket A Tasket

These are some of Mama's baskets . . .

Have I ever told you how talented my mother is? If I haven't, I should have. Mama can do anything. She taught herself how to make baskets out of pine needles. It is very time consuming. Some people have asked Mama if she wanted to sell her baskets but she's put too much time and patience into them. It takes days to make a basket.

A friend told Mama that her baskets were very valuable. Like the old saying goes, if you have to ask how much it costs, you probably can't afford one. I am encouraging Mama to put her baskets in the fair this fall to show them off. By then, she should have dozens at the rate she is going now and she can pick her best, although I think all of them are the best.

But seriously, aren't they beautiful? My mother has always been able to create beautiful things. I'm not surprised to see her mastering another craft. She's incredible for an old woman. I wish I was half as talented as she is. She's my hero.

Moving Ain't Easy

Scout had to move his little metal building after he came back home. Scout and Bob, his boss, got the little building one day when it was dry enough to move it from Sugar Valley to Resaca. It has been raining, off and on, for weeks and the ground was a little soggy.
It was exciting to see Bob's big red truck pull into the driveway with a long trailer behind it, carrying Scout's little metal building and a big green tractor on back.
The little building was easy to move because of the sturdy floor underneath it that Scout built. He didn't even have to empty the building before moving it.
Bob's tractor backed through the gate and lifted the building up over the top of the fence. It was impressive. Don and Scout watched Bob work.
Scout and Bob are such a good team working together that it didn't take long at all for them to get the little building set up.
Bob sat the little building beside the barn and then they leveled it. Colt helped. Now Scout has a place to keep his things.
It's good to have friends who help you when you need them. Bob really came through for Scout. We're all grateful. Thanks Bob.

Slogging Along

I know I keep complaining about all the rain we've been getting but it doesn't ever seem like things will get back to normal. After it quit raining one day I went outside to take some pictures of the flooding. Bear in mind that the water had gone down a lot already.
This is our neighbor's driveway. Water runs down the middle of the driveway and floods over into our circular driveway. Water floods across the gravel we got last year and flows toward us.
The water forks off towards the corner of the house, puddling  up next to the foundation, and continues to run by the gravel all the way across the front of the house.
I can't believe we are having this trouble. We thought the gravel would keep us from parking in mud. Instead it diverted the path of the water and caused another problem.
The  backyard gets it's share of water every time it rains, too. That's why Scout built the bridge a long time ago. It's usually a dry ditch but when it rains, oh buddy, the bridge comes in handy.

The water runs around beside the carport and down the ditch beside the hedge that grows between our property and the neighbor's on the south until it finally runs into the ditch beside the highway.

We are going to build up the soil in front of the house and have a raised flower bed to keep the water away from the foundation. I hope that helps.

Every spring Don treats the house for termites. Termites thrive on a water supply so it's important to keep the house as dry as possible. If we can get guttering up and redesign the landscape a little bit I think we can fix this mess. The only trouble is, we have to wait for it to quit raining so much.

Who'd of ever thought I'd be complaining about rain again? Instead of complaining, I should just be thankful we have a house. I guess the drought is officially over. I wonder what kind of summer we're going to have this year. Hot and humid, or dry as a bone?

MARCH

I don't know about you, but I am excited because it's nearly spring. I hope to have another garden this year.

Well, well, well. I never thought I'd ever find any alcoholic drink I liked until I decided to buy some Peach Schnapps one weekend. I read a recipe on the back of the bottle for a Fuzzy Navel so I decided to pick up some schnapps and vodka. The first time I made one I thought, "Uh ... that's good."

Tonight I thought, "What the heck? I don't have anywhere to go, or anything to do, so I think I'll make me another Fuzzy Navel." I had a jug of orange juice in the refrigerator. I added a couple of maraschino cherries and juice. All I needed was a little paper umbrella to make it festive. After drinking a couple of drinks I declared them my new favorite cocktail. They're sweet, and peachy, and have a fuzzy taste to them like when you eat peaches. Yum, yum. It's the perfect southern drink. I think I'll declare it cocktail hour more often.

Not much has been going on around here. It's the same old same old. We sat in the sunlight on the carport today watching the crazy goat butting his head against the apple tree that is growing beside the bridge out back. When he tired of that, he butted his head against the park bench sitting under the tree. He also likes pooping all over the bridge. Little goat droppings are scattered on the wooden planks. Daddy calls them smart pills. No, really. They're smart pills! Try one and see if it doesn't make you a little bit smarter.

Colt's on spring break this week. Colt's building homemade banjos out of old peanut cans, duct tape, and broke guitar strings. They turned out surprisingly good. Today he went to Bigham's Music Store in Dalton to see if he could get parts for a foot pedal for a guitar. Lord knows what he'll be up to next.

We had a visit on Sunday from our buddy, Jason, who came to see how we were doing. Colt roped him into helping change the oil in his Ford Focus. Jason always gets roped into helping the boys when he comes to visit. He's too good natured for his own good.

I'm getting tired of the cold, and hot, then cold again, temperatures. And the rain. Lord I'm getting tired of the rain. Even if all the pesky insects don't die, I want sunshine and warm temperatures. I want to watch things grow. I'm ready for spring.

I've got to go now. I think I hear Colt in the kitchen cupboard with my Peach Schnapps. I'll holler back later.

Ask Yourself

I keep seeing stories about different people and groups that have been working for years trying to get rid of Social Security and Medicare. I've seen different articles citing people who have been in politics for years, who are linked to powerful corporations or people, and who have been trying to abolish these programs for decades.

One such person, Peter G. Peterson, a billionaire  and former Nixon crony, has used his wealth to support programs designed to sway the public opinion against Social Security under the guise of repairing the "nation's debt problem", the "unsustainable" federal budget deficits. Peterson "sold his private equity firm Blackstone Group on the eve of the financial crisis" but "failed to warn of the $8 trillion housing bubble" despite constantly spouting dire apocalyptic warnings. Later he promised to "fix America's key fiscal sustainability problems" by pledging $1 billion. He is another one of the conservatives on the right who only cares about himself and is willing to work diligently to make sure poor people have less to survive on.

It amazes me that these selfish, greedy, nasty people have tried their entire lives to take away programs set up to protect and strengthen different demographic groups who are in the most need of protecting, yet they can afford insurance and healthcare for themselves and have no empathy for their fellow men.

Everyone who is in politics on the conservative right is working to strip hardworking Americans of their entitlement programs.  Let me stop here and explain something to you before you go ballistic. Entitlement means something someone is entitled to. For example, every person is entitled to the right to pursue happiness, however that may be. Some people want to work in a circus, others want to work on Wall Street, but I repeat myself. Entitlement does not mean GIFT, or free, or handout. It means you earned it or you deserve it, or you qualify for it. Contrary to common believe many people don't even apply for any aid despite qualifying because they don't want to take charity. They may really need some programs, but they don't want to be looked down on by their peers.

When my children were young they qualified for reduced lunch one year. The school sent a form home for me to fill out. We were on the upper end of the scale but we qualified.  The boys had reduced lunches for a while, until Don's work picked up and we were able to pay the full amount again. I was afraid the school would stigmatize my children for being "poor" and not treat them equally. Because of that pride, or fear, we declined reduced lunches as soon as we could. Lots of people are too proud, or ashamed, to accept help, even if those very programs are in place to help those very people who need them.

I hear such nasty things from people on the internet who "don't want their tax money to go to poor people." They sneer at people who are so needy that they can't afford to live without government help, and they accuse them of being lazy, or shiftless, or unworthy in some way. They accuse poor people of using government money to buy drugs even though it has been proven time and time again that people who are on welfare are no more likely to take drugs than any other group of people in any economic group. It's simply a scare tactic used by the brainwashed, or manipulative, to rip on the weakest people in society.

Those same people don't say a word about the billionaires who are manipulating the public, swaying blind followers to support tax cuts for the rich. Never in my lifetime have the corporations and wealthiest citizens in this country had such control and support from lower and middle class citizens who believe the propaganda the Republicans have using to control them. They have been using fear and hot button issues to sway the voters for years.

One example of the Republicans using hot topics to control their constituents is the example of abortion. Every year, in and out, there is a heated debate about abortion which locks the pro-choice against the anti-choice supporters in a heated battle to protect, or deny, women equal rights. Someone said that the Republicans don't want to really abolish abortion because they use it to incite their voting base and stir them up to vote. I suppose that is partly true, but states have been working diligently to strip states of the right to any access to abortion clinics and Planned Parenthood clinics, of which only about 3% of their income goes towards abortions. Republicans don't care if women are stripped of the right to medical care as long as they can proclaim to their base that they are squashing any possibility of abortions, no matter the cost.

I guess it doesn't matter how many women don't get gynecological care which can save many lives. Women's first defense against cancer is an annual physical and pap smear. Planned Parenthood works with health centers throughout the country to serve the poorest people in communities. It is some women's only hope. Planned Parenthood not only cares for women, but it also provides services to help young mothers care for their infants and children.

Every time I read about some conservative trying to cut social services I think about the lives they are willing to destroy, and I wonder how people could vote for these people. Isn't it obvious that Republicans only care about the "almighty dollar" and "what's in it for me"?

Rich people will never understand what it is like to live on a fixed income. They never had to struggle to buy food, pay rent, or bills. They can never conceive of living on minimum wages and raising a family in a dumpy neighborhood scraping to get by, living from paycheck to paycheck. No wonder they have no empathy. Their lack of empathy and patriotism makes it easy for them to outsource jobs to China or India. Their lack of respect for workers gives them the audacity to cut full time employees and cut part time hours so that they won't have to provide insurance coverage under the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare.

These same fat cats want to keep their tax cuts and limitless loopholes but cry for the slashing of Social Security and Medicare for everybody in America to cut the budget. They have raked in record profits and giant salaries since the Great Recession, but they claim that it is too expensive to provide insurance coverage for their employees. They think its a disgrace to raise minimum wage which is $7.25 an hour although the populace are the main consumers in this country. Without discretionary spending the economy grinds to a halt. The argument about raising the minimum wage to a more respectable $9 an hour would cause everything to cost more is a hollow argument. If you have been sleeping and haven't noticed, every year prices go up.

Every year, whether Don gets a dime raise or not, everything costs more. Our property taxes and insurance goes up. Our phone bill, electric bill, TV, and internet bill goes up. Everything goes up. Any profit we get from a raise increase is gobbled up by every other service or tax we have to pay. The only bill that has supposedly decreased is the gas bill, but I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't lower because of warmer weather. Global warming, don't you know. Still, I wonder how people who don't have a decent income are able to survive.

Children who are raised in poverty don't have the resources to help them climb out of poverty unless the government invests in them, whether it is with reduced lunch programs, food stamps, or medical care at health centers instead of with family doctors because they can't afford doctor's fees.

Nobody can choose whose family they are born into. You can no more choose your parents than you can control your situation when you are young. If you are lucky enough to be born into a family with money you don't have to worry about anything. Your parents will provide for you. But if you are born in a family who isn't so fortunate, you are at the mercy of society. A selfish, and thoughtless society which ignores its children will spawn a society of selfish, thoughtless people, and some of those people will rebel and fight back. Some people will steal and cheat to get ahead. The callousness and insensitivity will grow until the whole country becomes like that.

Children aren't the only ones who will be affected by austerity and cuts in services that shore up the poor, or young. Old people are at the mercy of the government. The government guarantees them access to healthcare and their earned pension funds they have been paying into all their lives through their FICA taxes. This is not an entitlement, people. It is something you have been paying into for years. It's like a savings account that the government has guaranteed will be there for you when you are retired.

As the older generation moves towards retirement, jobs will become vacant and younger people will step in to fill those vacancies. Young people working and paying into Social Security will be investing in the retirement of their predecessors and insuring them a safe and livable income. None of that will happen if the government does not protect the rights of our workforce and citizenry and provide them with their full entitlement to live on.

As I look at the indifference and rabid disdain for the poor and those going on Social Security, which by the way everyone will eventually qualify for, I wonder how our country got so screwed up. When I think about people like Peter Peterson, who has spent his entire life trying to dismantle Social Security, I have to ask myself why someone who has everything they could ask for would want to deny the same rights for a decent living to the poor or middle class. They truly don't understand what it is to be a normal person. They certainly don't care about normal people. Normal people are beneath them and don't deserve access to healthcare, food, or a decent education. Normal people are only there to serve the rich. Other than that, they don't count.

I don't believe that will make America a better country. I do believe it will make it a bloodthirsty, greedy country if we continue this way. My only hope is that people are beginning to wake up and question the direction that the Republicans are trying to take this country. We still have many more issues that need to be resolved in this country, but the most important issue we face today is the battle between the wealthy Republicans and the liberal Democrats. It's like a battle between David and Goliath. I'm betting on the little guy.

America is a great country and it was a strong country with a booming economy until George Bush maneuvered us into two wars in three years. Thousands and thousands of soldiers left their homes and were deployed time and again to Afghanistan or Iraq. During that cycle of tour people lost the jobs they had been working at before the wars. The stress on our economy, and the lies and manipulation of the government, has taken a toll on this country. It will probably take decades to regain our footing.

When you hear about people who want to deny people entitlements remember that entitlements are not gifts. The best gift America can give her citizens is the gift of helping those who need it and taxing those who earn the most in proportion to the rest of society. Rewarding the rich while denying poorer people access to social services creates inequality.

When you hear people decrying social services and any and all programs for the lower income or general population ask yourself WHY they want to dismantle a safety net that went into effect August 14, 1935 to help the country when everyone was struggling to survive after the Great Depression. This system has been the saving grace of millions of Americans who have retired over the years. Now our country is trying to strip us of an investment we made and agreed to 78 years ago. I think Social Security and all government programs to assist its citizenry is as relevant today as it was during Roosevelt's day. He was a wise and astute man who had a vision for the future to provide a system that ensures our country grows by assisting the weaker, or elderly, or young, or feeble. There will always be people in the world who need protection. It should be an inalienable right. Protection for all.

Ask yourself if the people who want to cut Social Security and Medicare have your best interests at heart. Ask yourself if it is really in your best interest for rich people to pay a lower tax scale than you. Ask yourself why.

Redneck Engineering

I told you that we had so much water running under the house that we had to put a sump pump under the house when it rained hard didn't I? Our old sump pump quit working so Don bought a new one. It wouldn't fit under the house where the old one was so Don put it under the house through the hole in the hallway. It's not attractive, and we can't shut the doors because the hose has to run outside to drain the water, but it's better than nothing. Don cut the hole in the hall floor a while back so he wouldn't have to crawl all the way under the house. The crawlspace is very small and claustrophobic. We've done lots of things around here that aren't particularly kosher. This is just one small example of our handy work.

The hose had to run from the hallway, through the living room, and out the front door.
Notice the black hose is attached to another white hose to make it long enough for the water to drain into the front yard.
All covered up and back to "normal", whatever that is, around here. Watch the soft spot!

I know this looks really, really redneck but you gotta do what you gotta do to get by and this is the only way to get the house dried back out. Don's going to dig a hole and put a bucket under the house for the sump pump to sit in. Hopefully we will be able to figure out how to get the pipe to run under the house and maybe next time we won't have to leave the front door open when it rains and floods. Now you know why I hate it when it rains.

We've already decided to build up the flower beds in front of the house to keep the water from running under the house. We have to put up new guttering, too. If that doesn't work, I don't know what we're going to do.

We took the old guttering down when the guys put our metal roof on the house a few years ago. Whereas most people feel inconvenienced by the rain, we live in dread. We have always had to deal with flooding when it rains too hard, but when the roof started leaking it ramped up the fear. We put buckets under the drips, hoping it would quit raining until we got the new roof on. You don't know how thankful you can feel when it rains and you have a new roof. It will make you smile. I didn't mind the rain after that until recently.

Ever since we got the gravel in our driveway last year, when it rains, the water funnels towards the house. It has become a mess. The situation became obvious when we could see a brown muddy residue after the rains running down the side of the graveled driveway. It's also running over the grease trap in the front yard. That clogs up the kitchen sink. Oy! What a mess.

We get all our neighbors runoff when it rains. This has been a running battle ever since we bought the house. We bought it during a drought and it was high and dry. Right after that the rain gods, or the fickle finger of fate, or whatever you want to call it, decided to switch tactics and the drought broke. It would rain so long and flood so badly, it felt like we were living on a boat. Water surrounded the house.

After we moved here Don's stepfather, Charlie McAllister, helped us level the yard and make the runoff turn away from the house. Charlie used to be a bulldozer operator and he knew what he was doing. The problem is, our property is a couple of feet lower than the property next to us. Every time it rains water runs down the ditch between our property and we take on water. I'll be glad when we finally figure out a solution.

I just wish we could afford to move somewhere high and dry. I'm tired of living in a dry riverbed.

FEBRUARY

February started off with a bang. So far there has been a tornado, an earthquake, and even a little bit of snow. Jonquils and mini-forsythias are struggling to bloom. Mother Nature's turned upside down. The weather is like a crazy bitch, blowing hot and cold. There's no telling what might happen next.

No matter what the groundhog says, we still have about six more weeks of winter. It sure is a wet winter. Colt said the Almanac had predicted that. I don't know how they are able to nail weather so often but those farmers always had to watch the weather so they probably passed it on for thousands of years.

Saturday I watched a marathon showing of Groundhog Day, all day long. It's a surprisingly sweet and romantic film with Bill Murray and Andie McDowell. The more I watched it, the more I liked it.

Sunday I immersed myself in The Walking Dead reruns while the guys watched football. Today was Superbowl Sunday. The Ravens and the 49ers. That's a big deal in America. Half of the country, and most of the south, watch the Superbowl. Go Teams!

Colt's friends, Brent, and Brenda, and their three kids came to watch the Superbowl. They stayed until Brenda's little boy got cranky and wanted to go home. He was a tired little fellow.

I am enamored with the twins, Mason and MacKenzie. Boy, what a handful. They're old enough to walk now. Oy! I adore little kids. Their older brother,Logan, was a very well mannered and sweet little boy. He had enjoyed seeing the chickens and goat when they first came over. He just wasn't used to being over here and was tired after a few hours. I can understand that. I get antsy when I'm in another environment, too, if I have to stay too long.
*****
I've taken up reading again. I bought a paperback from our new Dollar General Market and got hooked. It was a light look at Washington through the eyes of an idealistic young woman who worked for a young Senator at the capitol. Since I've been so immersed in politics lately, I thought it would be fun to read a story about it from the "inside". The book Sammy's Hill by Kristin Gore was fin-tas-tic! (You'll have to read the book to get that reference.) If you run across this book and like a good romantic comedy, check it out. You won't be disappointed.

I've started on another paperback book from the dollar store. It's a humdinger. It is written by someone raised in north Georgia. I can hardly wait to see how it ends. More book reviews later, maybe.

Changes

I don't know where to begin. It seems like there have been lots of changes in our lives recently. Scout moved back home after he and his girlfriend broke up, then Don's mama passed away, and his uncle died a few days later. Don's sister's husband had surgery for an aneurysm and had a hard time. He has been hospitalized ever since. He's taking therapy now. It seems like everywhere I look there is change.

I went to Doctor Phillip about three months ago and he removed the bonding from my front teeth. It was very painful and left one tooth loose. When I went to Doctor Frank for my bi-yearly cleaning they told me I needed my teeth bonded again to save that loose tooth. Naturally I was upset and worried about losing my tooth. I had to have the tooth re-bonded. It didn't take very long.

Doctor Frank had his beautiful, big dog at the office. I told him that his dog looked like a dog that I saw on the news because people had mistaken it for a baby lion on the loose. He said his dog was the same kind, only it didn't look as much like a poodle. It was shaggy but not poofy. I liked having the dog in there to scratch his head and calm me down. Pets are supposed to help calm your heart and breathing when you pet them. It's a two way relationship because they feel calm, too.

I needed something to make me feel calm after I asked the doctor how much the bonding was going to cost. I told Doctor Frank I should go back over to Doctor Phillip's and knock a knot on his head for removing the bonding and loosening my front tooth.  He cost me a chunk of change. I'll never get rich at this rate, or anything else, for that matter. I have many unfulfilled dreams and they all hinge on money. I've put too much money in saving my teeth to give up now so I had to have the bonding again.

I lived through all that and even survived the flooding we endured during the heavy rains. I've watched Scout painting and decorating his room, getting it in shape to live in again.

Mama decided to buy Scout a new bed for his room so we went to Dalton Auction to see what they had. That's where I bought Scout and Colt's twin beds last time. We had moved Scout's bed to Marietta when Colt got an apartment so we needed another bed for Scout again. I hadn't expected him to come back home when I let Colt have his old bed.

Mama, Scout and I went to see if they had any twin-XL's, like the other ones. They had a foam mattress "like the twin beds in the Marriott", we were informed. The mattress cost a lot more than I expected. Mama wanted to buy it but I said we should think about it and check out a few more sales.

We went to Mur-Maid Mattresses in Dalton but they weren't any better, or as thick, as the first one we saw. Scout and I headed back home to think about it. Mama kept insisting that we buy the mattress from Carmichael's. The next day she called Scout and convinced him to go back to Dalton Auction with her to get the bed. Yeah! Scout doesn't have to sleep on the pull-out couch any more.

Near the end of the old year one of my friend's and I got back in touch with each other after her father passed away. We've known each other and loved each other forever but we are both very strong personalities and we don't always see eye to eye. We disagreed about everything during the electoral season until she finally decided not to interact with me anymore. I still couldn't let that stop me from sending my love and condolences when I saw her father's obituary in the paper. I know how much she loves her parents. Mr. and Mrs. S were wonderful when we were kids. I never saw them angry or upset and we did lots of dumb things when we were kids to make anybody want to scream.

We liked to sleep in her older brother's room and lay on the bed all night  long reading his comic books. That's where I developed my crush on Superman.

Another friend of mine got in touch when she called to offer her condolences when Don's mother passed away. She has always been an avid reader and loves sharing her books with me. She mailed The Land of Painted Caves to me. I have a stack of her books I need to return.

I don't know what it is about this time of year but I've noticed a lot of change. I had been living in fear of the possibility that President Obama might lose the election and have been disgusted by the Republicans tricks and underhanded tactics. I was horrified to imagine a Mitt Romney presidency. It was painfully obvious that he didn't give a damn about people like me. I wasn't rich enough, or conservative enough, or important enough for his consideration.

I've always lived by the philosophy that riches are the things you value in your heart, not the things you can purchase. I never wanted to impress anyone or live up to other people's standards. It seemed like a losing game. I'm thankful that I am finally of an age when I don't have to try to fit in. I prefer to stand out. I'm not like anyone, and nobody's like me. Nobody would want to be.

Maybe the changes I feel in the air are affecting everyone because there has been a strong change across America. People amazed me as they turned out to vote for President Obama again, and exercise their civil rights. I think people are getting tired of the conservative rhetoric which was polluting the country with it's ultra-conservative chants denouncing the hardworking people who really keep America up and running. It's time for America to get back on track and for the government to quit using scare tactics to control us.

I welcome change, as long as it's for the positive and to create better conditions for all Americans. I used to think we would be living in the space age when I was a kid. It's really disappointing to see that we've moved back about fifty years in the political rhetoric in this country. We should be aiming for the stars, not the past.

Distracted

This new year feels like the old year. Another Christmas and another New Year and we had the same old song and dance. It started to rain, and the ground was saturated, and we had to watch the plumbing closely. We live in lowland and get all the runoff when it rains. I believe this used to be a riverbed long, long ago and the natural contours of the land cause everything to flood when it rains a lot in Resaca.

I didn't feel very well around the holidays and it took me a while to recover. On top of that, Colt was home for the holidays, and Scout has come back home again.

Scout has been in the process of cleaning out his room, that I had turned into a dumping ground, and decorating it. He went to Home Depot and got two gallons of green paint and painted everything, then he put down new linoleum. He says it's the best looking room in the house, and he's right. It is. I didn't know the little fellow had such good taste. He's creating a man-cave and I love it. He got his decorating talent from my mama.

I gave Scout free rein to clean up with strict orders not to lose my papers. Papers could range from old bills and receipts, to important tax documents. I pile everything up and wait for it to all go away. It never does. That's why I need FlyLady. Doing a little at a time and going through it regularly will finally help conquer a mess, fifteen minutes at a time. I need to start flying again and that's a good place to start.

Having Scout and Colt home again over the holidays was nice. I had forgotten how much fun it is to have them around. They always pick on me and make fun of me because I'm "old", or "deaf", or something else. I don't mind. I know they're only stating the obvious and it's never in malice, only fun. I keep trying to explain to them that they should cut me some slack because ... well, doggone it, I'm old and deaf and naturally annoying so just get over it and give me a break. After all, I am their mama.

Colt started winter semester at Southern Polytechnic State University again this week. I cried when he left. I thought I had finally stopped that silly blubbering but I guess I haven't. It took me by surprise because he had been getting on my nerves over the winter break.

When Scout came home he brought his pets, a dwarf goat and two white chickens named Larry and Margaret. The goat's name is Vinnie but sometimes I call him Bennie and can hear that Elton John song in my head singing on a loop "Bennie! Bennie! Bennie and the Jets" only I hear it "Vinnie! Vinnie! Vinnie and the Pets."  Did I tell you I have a vivid imagination?

Vinnie
and the Pets

An old friend sent me a book before Christmas and I've been reading it. When I get into reading a book, I tend to ignore everything else and don't get on the internet as much. I was reading The Land of Painted Caves by Jean M. Auel. It is the fifth, and possibly final, book in The Clan of the Cave Bear series although I hope it isn't her last. I was left hanging wondering what will happen to Ayla and Jondalar in their future.

While I was reading The Land of Painted Caves I happened to see a program on the History Channel called CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS about a cave in France called Chauvet-Pont-d'Arc Cave with incredible paintings on the walls. It was discovered in December 18, 1994. That is the same cave portrayed in the Jean Auel book The Land of Painted Caves. The program brought the story to life as I saw the remarkable drawings that had been described in the book. It must have been a very important and sacred site for the indigenous people who lived approximately 30,000 years ago and who painted the animals on the walls of the cave.

We are very fortunate to live in a day and age in which we can view these amazing drawings via pictures and film over television and the internet. I thank God every day that we live in such a modern society which links us all, everyone all over the globe. Knowledge is power.

Daddy's Last Birthday

Happy New Year Everybody! I hope everybody made it through the New Year alive and well. Today we went to Momma's and Daddy's for dinner. We were celebrating New Year and Daddy's birthday.  Momma made two delicious lemon meringue pies. Yum, yum. My mouth is watering just thinking about them. I love lemon pies.

I thought I'd share Momma's recipe with you for new years. Consider this my gift to you. Enjoy!

Happy 2013 Peace and Prosperity for US All.

LEMON MERINGUE PIE

9" pastry shell per pie

FILLING
1/2-3/4 tsp grated lemon rind, packed
1/3 cup strained lemon juice (2 med. lemons)
1/4 cup cornstarch
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
1 1/3 cup sugar
1/4 tsp salt
1 1/2 cup boiling water
3 egg yolks
3 tbsp firm butter

MERINGUE
Dash of salt
3 egg whites
1/3 cup sugar
1 tsp sugar

Bake and cool pastry shell. Wash lemons and grate off yellow part of rind. Squeeze juice, run through course strainer. Blend cornstarch, flour, sugar, and salt in a 3 quart saucepan. Stir in boiling water (double boiler style). Place over direct heat, cook and stir constantly until thick and clear, about 3 minutes.

Beat egg yolks, quickly stir in about 1/3 cup of hot mixture, return to double boiler. Cook and stir about 2 minutes longer. Remove from heat, stir in butter, then the rind, then the lemon juice, gradually in small portions, mixing well after each. Pour into cooled pie shell.

Meanwhile, make meringue:
Add salt to egg whites and beat until just stiff, then gradually beat in 1/3 cup sugar until meringue is stiff and shiny. Spread lightly over pie so it touches crust all around, swirl or spread smooth and mark into 6 serving pieces with long knife blade. Sprinkle with the tsp of sugar. Bake at moderate temperature 350 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown. Remove to cake rack out of draft to cool 2 or 3 hours before cutting. Makes 6 servings.

Double recipe to make two pies.
