The Destruction of America

God, I hope this is a good year. I seriously have my doubts though. We shall see.

It's not even the middle of the month and our nation is already in free fall. We have learned, barely a week before the inauguration of president Trump, that the Russians were in contact with the Trump team before the election and they worked diligently, leaking information to discredit Clinton.

Our government and the electoral process have been compromised. America has never had so direct an attack from a foreign government before. How we respond to this attack on our democracy, and their successful elevation of a buffoon to the highest office in the land, who  is Putin's puppet, will test the very fabric of democracy. I don't hold high hopes now that the Republicans have control of the house and the senate.

One quarter of the voting public support this traitor and his swamp of deplorables who will dismantle our government and squeeze every dime out of us. They don't even understand the damage they have wrought. They don't care.

Obamacare is not the real name for the health bill. It is called the Patient Protection Affordable Care Act. Republicans labeled it "Obamacare" to undermine the President and the policy. The ACA, short for PPACA, strengthened patient's coverage and expanded their healthcare. People didn't face lifetime caps on coverage for catastrophic illnesses or denial of coverage for preexisting conditions, two of the most important benefits of the ACA.

The ACA was based on "Romneycare" which Mitt Romney created for his state when he was governor of Massachusetts. If you do a little research you will find that his plan was based on the Heritage Foundation's plan.
Believe it or not, the Republicans did draft a similar health plan previously.

The Heritage Foundation is a conservative research think tank organization that evolved from the John Birch Society. JBS was an extremist group that nearly died out until the Tea Party arose during the economic recession. They are anti-government radicals.

Presidents have tried to introduce universal health care since Franklin Delano Roosevelt was in office in 1933. Republicans have always opposed it.

Republicans have already passed a bill in the senate on Thursday (1-12-17) blocking six parts of Obamacare. When Republicans stayed in session until 02:00 Friday morning, they blocked coverage for preexisting conditions, contraceptive coverage, child health care program (CHIP), allowing children under 26 to stay on their parent's insurance, medicaid expansion for lower income, and veteran's coverage. All of these things have been a godsent for millions of people who didn't have insurance before. Now, it is being stripped away from us.

This is only the beginning. They're going to work on social security and medicare next. God help us all.

The Nursery

This month has flown by. I'm glad. The sooner spring comes, the better. I've been cleaning up Colt's room and making a nursery for the baby, Alice. Colt put up new closet doors and I bought some paint. Oh wow! I guess I'm going to have to paint soon. I'm trying to get psyched up. Lord, help me.

JANUARY

I was diagnosed with hyperglycemia and sent to a clinic this year. They taught me how to regulate my diet and take care of myself. It seems, diabetics should pay close attention to their eyesight, and their feet, among other things. One speaker told us to take off our shoes and socks when we go to the doctor to let them inspect our feet.

I had to see the nurse practitioner the other day for a pre-op visit so I peeled off my shoes and cooled my hot feet on the cool linoleum. I told her I have a problem with cracked toes and was worried because they were sore. She checked my feet and asked me if I felt her touch. "Yes! Yes, I did." "Good. You're alright." She recommended an ointment for my toes. Good deal.

I am trying to cut out all the sweets and breads I used to eat and keep my blood sugar under control. Donny and I have been walking at the Church of God across the street.

Since October I have lost about twenty pounds. My pants nearly fall off. I've taken to wearing belts and not overloading my pockets so my pants don't droop. I haven't been dieting. I've just been trying to stay away from the foods I used to eat before I found out I was diabetic.

`````````````````````````````````````````````````
My mind is all over the place. I'm unable to focus and haven't felt like spilling all the beans on my blog. Nobody wants to hear, "My life is so hard." blah, blah, blah. Everybody has problems, some far, far worse than mine. I don't want to exude fake exuberance and pretend like life is peachy keen, either. "Santa brought me a pony!" although he did one time. But that's another story.
This has been a hard year for everybody, my family included. Things have settled down a little and I don't like rocking the boat. I just hope things keep on improving but it doesn't really look that way.
Don and I went shopping for a flat screen TV and I nearly had a breakdown when I realized I didn't have a hundred dollars I thought I had put in my wallet. I kept going over everything in my mind and really believe I saw the money in my billfold while we were at the house. I just don't know. Either way, I have to let go of that little dream. I hate when I get mixed up about money. It makes me crazy. I guess that's another one of those "old fart" moments.
JANUARY
It looks like two thousand fourteen is going to be a rough year. We are facing a new year and a new era in our lives as we adjust to the loss of Daddy. My sons and I have been doing everything we can to help Mama. I try to check on her every day and we are always ready to help her any way we can.
We had record breaking temperatures this week. It got down to 7 degrees Tuesday night. Mama's water froze and the pipes burst. Scout and Colt tried to cut the water off but it wouldn't budge.
Mama called the utilities company and they came down to turn the water main off early the next day. She said she heard a loud "pop" when he turned it. Mama can't hear squat so it must have been really loud.
The man who turned the water off said it was okay and only the sound of metal scraping against metal. Yeah, right!
The water company will have to come fix the broken cutoff on the main line. The meter box has been fulling up with water and Mama's water was cut off.
Scout and Colt worked on the water line every evening after work. Scout and Colt fixed everything, even the box over the pipes. They put new pvc pipes and the regulator back on the house and finally got the water turned on. Mama bought insulation to cover the pipes. We sure don't want to go through this again.
Stay safe. Stay warm. And above all ... let the water drip when the temperatures are in the single digits.
Daddy's Last Birthday
Happy New Year Everybody! I hope everybody made it through the New Year alive and well. Today we went to Momma's and Daddy's for dinner. We were celebrating New Year and Daddy's birthday.  Momma made two delicious lemon meringue pies. Yum, yum. My mouth is watering just thinking about them. I love lemon pies.
I thought I'd share Momma's recipe with you for new years. Consider this my gift to you. Enjoy!
LEMON MERINGUE PIE
9" pastry shell per pie
FILLING
1/2-3/4 tsp grated lemon rind, packed
1/3 cup strained lemon juice (2 med. lemons)
1/4 cup cornstarch
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
1 1/3 cup sugar
1/4 tsp salt
1 1/2 cup boiling water
3 egg yolks
3 tbsp firm butter
MERINGUE
Dash of salt
3 egg whites
1/3 cup sugar
1 tsp sugar
Bake and cool pastry shell. Wash lemons and grate off yellow part of rind. Squeeze juice, run through course strainer. Blend cornstarch, flour, sugar, and salt in a 3 quart saucepan. Stir in boiling water (double boiler style). Place over direct heat, cook and stir constantly until thick and clear, about 3 minutes.
Beat egg yolks, quickly stir in about 1/3 cup of hot mixture, return to double boiler. Cook and stir about 2 minutes longer. Remove from heat, stir in butter, then the rind, then the lemon juice, gradually in small portions, mixing well after each. Pour into cooled pie shell.
Meanwhile, make meringue:
Add salt to egg whites and beat until just stiff, then gradually beat in 1/3 cup sugar until meringue is stiff and shiny. Spread lightly over pie so it touches crust all around, swirl or spread smooth and mark into 6 serving pieces with long knife blade. Sprinkle with the tsp of sugar. Bake at moderate temperature 350 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown. Remove to cake rack out of draft to cool 2 or 3 hours before cutting. Makes 6 servings.
Double recipe to make two pies.
