JUNE

This is the weekend of the annual Dixie Highway 90 Mile Yard Sale. I noticed people are setting up several booths in anticipation. It's always a big deal and traffic can be bumper to bumper.

I have to be careful not to rubberneck and run over anybody.

I was sidelined last week when my truck had to be worked on.

I had to go to the dentist Monday because I developed an infection in my gums!

Mamma's ankles are swelling and Mary was complaining with a pain in her buttocks. Colt and I have bad coughs.

I know it seems like one thing after the other is always going on and it's not happening news or interesting stuff. It's just plain boring day to day life. I prefer it to the alternative. Wouldn't you? I hate the drama.

There are lots of things going on but they're big things and little things and things that don't really mean much to anybody but us.

I wish Daddy was still alive. He would have a blowout birthday party for Mamma's 87th birthday. That's a lot of candles. We'd have to have the fire department on standby. I miss my daddy.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

JUNE

Mamma and I went to Red Lobster for her birthday. We had a great time and indulged in the ultimate feast. Mamma has always loved seafood but she and Daddy never went out to eat. I think she should enjoy herself and Red Lobster is especially enjoyable. I think I finally gave her a gift she liked.
***********
I have become a goat herder, if you can call anyone who only has one goat, a "herder." Actually, I am a dubious caregiver to a goat, one surly old dog, and a neurotic lovebird plucking itself to death. They all want to follow me around. If the goat can keep me in her sight, she won't cry. But, low, if she can't see me, she goes a bellowing "ma!" all the time. I think she's trying to say "Pam" but she just can't make a P. That's my theory anyway. In all honesty I'm enjoying being at home more and watching the goat is a bonus.

The bird has developed a crude form of communication. He raises the door of the water bowl and drops it until I look to see if it needs water. He also does the same thing when he wants seed. That's pretty smart for a bird brain. I guess he had to figure out something because sometimes I ignore him.

JUNE

The other day I woke up only to realize our water wasn't working. That happens  so often I have the water company's phone number on speed-dial. I called to report the outage and someone told me the water had been shut off because of a water leak. Big surprise.

We've lived in Resaca for over 20 years and have always had trouble with the water. Instead of replacing all the waterlines and fixing the problem all at once, they like to patch it up until next time. I've become so used to the problem and so anxious about drinking dirty water I boil my water and keep it in glass jugs in the refrigerator. That's a good thing. I had a gallon of fresh chilled drinking water.

Being the undaunted character I am, I decided to climb back into bed until the water came back on. Scout woke me up later and told me the water was running again. Woo-hoo! Happy days. Am I right?

Scout didn't feel well and took the week off. He stayed in bed late and sat around with a stuffy head, feeling blah. I finally got him out of the house one day to go with Colt and me to look for a new weed whacker. We bought a Husqvarnah trimmer for the yard. Scout fell in love with it. Boy, am I glad. He couldn't wait to try it out. The yard hasn't looked this good in years.

The burn ban was supposed to start in May but Gordon County was able to get it lifted until the end of the month because so many neighborhoods had storm damage and it is so much trouble to take it to the landfill. That gave us a perfect opportunity to burn all the leaves that keep falling off the magnolia trees. They shed leaves all throughout the summer. The leaves are like dry paper and burn easily. Too easy sometimes. Scout burned a limb on the tree because of a fire he made underneath them.

Don's been working seven days a week. The money's good but it's wearing him out. Colt started back to college. He's taking a summer class. He only has a couple of classes until he graduates.

Since we have a little garden this year we went to Mama's and Daddy's to help them plant their garden. Daddy likes to overdo it and plants enough for the whole family. They planted green beans, peas, tomatoes, corn and squash, among other things. I got Daddy to let us put newspapers and straw around his cabbage. We put it around the plants to cut down on weeding. I hope it helps. I hate working in the garden.

Next weekend is the Dixie Highway yard sale. It's usually the first full weekend in June. It runs north from Chattanooga all the way south to Atlanta on Highway 41. Everybody puts their merchandise out in their yards or along the highway to sell. I try to avoid it like the plague because I start rubbernecking and nearly rear end somebody every year. We live right on the highway so we get to watch the parade of shoppers and gawkers every year.

Next weekend is also my mother's birthday and Daddy always plans a "surprise birthday party" for her. This year he has invited their friends from church to a cookout. The boys and I are going to help him mow the yard and clean up for company next week. The boys weed eat and get the places Daddy can't mow on the riding mower. It doesn't take long if two or more of us work together. Daddy is wearing Mama out cleaning up around the house.

We've got lots of work to do around here this summer. Painting, gardening, and putting up new guttering. I think this is going to be a great summer.

Storm Damage

We had some pretty high winds and about three big thunderstorms yesterday. Today Don went out to see if there was any damage. A huge limb broke out of a Mimosa tree and tore down the fence and landed on the roof of our barn. I'm glad the dogs weren't hurt when the tree fell. It landed on 'Gitmo' where the dogs stay. Don used his chain saw to cut the limb off of the fence and the roof of the barn. Scout and Colt helped Don get the tree off of everything. They will have to repair the fence so the dogs can't get out. That's what we did for Father's Day.

It's always something!

I sure am glad I have a camera now so I can post pictures of all the crazy things that happen around here. I am so grateful for both of my wonderful sons who are always willing to help around here. I'm thankful to have such a good, hardworking husband, too. All in all, it wasn't a bad Sunday afternoon.

After that Scout and Colt went fishing.
